2017 : DES TIGRES DANS UN SANCTUAIRE DE VIE SAUVAGE AU MEXIQUE. Riviera Maya News, ce jour. Sabrina Rodriguez. "New Jaguar, Tiger Reserve approved for Riviera Maya".

Cancun, Q.R. – A new animal reserve for the state of Quintana Roo has been approved. The reserve, which has been approved by the Secretariat of Environment and Natural Resources (Semarnat), will be an ongoing project to bring tigers and jaguars into the region.

The new reserve, called Reserve Bengal Felina, is owned by Reserve Bengal SA de CV which plans to start with 18 jaguars (Pantera onca) and tigers (Pantera tigris), both they say, are of high ecological importance in their regions of origin.

State delegate of semarnat, Jose Luis Izaguirre Funez, said the project was approved because the owners of the reserve are committed to the rescue and preservation the species, which are listed in the Norma Oficial Mexicana (NOM)-059.

According to the Environmental Impact Statement (EIS), the project will take on an ecotourism approach as a wild sanctuary with the animals being on exhibition to national and international visitors. There will be a fee to enter the reserve where visitors can view the animals and participate in educational discussions and workshops about the extinction of the species as well as global warning, population status and the effects of the food chain.

The development of the reserve will be headed by The Institute of Greatly Endangered and Rare Species (TIGERS), an American organization established in South Carolina that is dedicated to promoting global conservation. Once the reserve is open they will join Rare Species Fund (RSF), a group dedicated to international conservation programs of terrestrial wildlife.

Reserve Bengal Felina is expected to be in operation late next year or early 2017. The 26,947 square meter reserve will be located at kilometer 19 on the country road at Puerto Morelos to Leona Vicario.
