The Amur leopard, one of the rarest cats of the planet, lives on the south-west of Primorye Territory in Russia.  According to the latest recording, which took place in 2007, the total number of leopards was estimated at 25-34 individuals.  Status and quality of habitat that small populations are changing rapidly and require close attention. After all, any fluctuations in numbers of subspecies may lead to irreparable consequences. Therefore, consideration of the whole area of the Amur leopard is held every three or four years - 3 times more likely than the general account of the tiger.

Currently, half of the area occupied by leopard federal PAs - Kedrovaya Pad "and in his custody reserve" Leopard. "  It is they who play a key role in accounting this year.  On routes "white" trail experts will be ready to leave, with effect from 1 February. The exact time depends on the weather: according to the procedure, the account is held after five days of snowfall.

Accounting tracks in the snow is the 70-ies and provides a fairly accurate information on the number of leopard and sex and age structure of populations.  For us the main result of this work will be searching and finding females with leopardyatami to organize the protection of individual broods and provide them with suitable conditions for rearing, - says Sergey Aramilev, program coordinator of WWF Russia Amur Branch of biodiversity.  - These "white" trail will be complemented by monitoring results using fotolovushek and DNA analysis of samples collected.  Thus, we have a complete picture of the situation with the leopard, and it will serve as a basis for a new edition of Strategies for saving the leopard. "

World Wildlife Fund (WWF) has consistently focused on monitoring the situation with the population of the Amur leopard.  With the participation of experts and financial support from WWF Russia, together with other community organizations since 2002, works on the annual monitoring leopard automatic cameras in the southern area.  In the northern area of work is similar to Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS).  In 2007, WWF joined efforts to collect samples for DNA analysis.  All three methods for the study of leopard - accounting for the "white" trail, automatic cameras and DNA analysis will be used this year in south-west Primorye.

According to the list of instructions of Russian Prime Minister from 30.09.2010, the Primorsky Territory Administration jointly by the Russian Academy of Sciences, since 2011, it is necessary to provide constant monitoring of the population of the Amur leopard.  Responsible for conducting management accounting is hunting supervision of Primorsky Krai, financial security operations this year by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) of Russia.

As a result of accounting system will be established for monitoring the Amur leopard, which includes an optimized set of methods used, which will operate on a permanent basis. For approval in the Ministry of Natural Resources will be transferred to the official methodology for recording and monitoring the leopard in the Far East of Russia.
