Today, the park project was approved by the state
environmental review. In the future park will be part of the American reserve.
"Beringia" is located in the eastern part of the Chukchi Peninsula and consists of five sections with a total
area of more than 18 thousand km 2, of which more than 3 km 2 falls on the marine area.
"Beringia" will preserve
the unique landscapes of the Chukchi Peninsula, hot springs, monuments, archeological, historical and cultural heritage, in the first place - the ancient cultures of the Eskimos and the
Chukchi. "Chukotka Peninsula - center of diversity of Arctic Flora, there are over 1,000 species and subspecies of plants. Within the national park inhabited by animals such as polar bear, bighorn sheep, the Pacific walrus, on the coasts pick up the enormous rookeries, spawning salmon in the
rivers, "- says Michael Stishov, coordinator of WWF-Russia on Arctic biodiversity.
Ecological and economic feasibility of establishing a national park was developed by staff of WWF, IEEP RAS and VNIIPrirody.
The need to create this national park is due to increasing anthropogenic pressures and the ongoing processes of climate
change. Now this area has the status of the regional natural park.
After the Russian government will sign a decree establishing a national park, will begin the process of creating the first
Russian-American protected area. "Beringia" in Russian
territory and the National Park Bering Land Bridge in the United States.
Back in June 1990, the USSR and the U.S. decided to organize a Soviet-American international park in Chukotka and Alaska to preserve the
unique natural and cultural complex. Over 20 years it took to turn political agreements into real solutions to the fullest
extent taken into account, on the one hand, the task of preserving the unique biodiversity of the region and the indigenous population, on the other - the socio-economic development.
Now Russia and neighboring countries has four cross-border territory. Each of the members of the trans-boundary protected area reserves managed in accordance with national legislation, and for them are developed and implemented joint programs for the
study of natural processes.
Results in support of the WWF was founded more than 90 federal and regional protected areas, an
area of more than 45 million hectares - is the area of France and Spain combined.
Transboundary Protected Areas in Russia
As part of the Russian-Finnish International Nature Reserve "Friendship", was established in 1991.
White-naped Reserve. The international reserves, formed in 1994,
includes reserve "White-naped," Reserve « "Mongol daguur" (Mongolia) and reserve
Khankaisky Reserve. In 1996 at Lake Hanka establishment of an
international nature reserve, which consists of Park "Khanka" and reserve
"Lake Hanka" (Heilongjiang Province, China).
Katun Preserve. As part of a transboundary reserve
"Altai", formed in 2011. It consists of Katun
Nature Reserve (Russia) and Caton-Karagai State Natural National Park (Kazakhstan).
