Jaipur: Ranthambore Tiger Reserve has assigned numbers to 16 'nameless' tigers, many of whom are missing and have not been spotted for the past several months.
Park authorities have assigned numbers to tigers that have turned adults and will soon carve out their territories in the forest. These 16 tigers - most of them at least two years old - will be called T-76, T-77, T-78 and so on. While the numbers have been assigned on the basis of footages of these tigers captured by trap cameras in the past, at least eight of them are untraceable for the past several months, sources said.
The park officials said that the numbers would help them identify and track the tigers. Ranthambore was the first national park in the country that began the tradition of assigning numbers to tigers on the basis of photos taken by trap cameras set up across the forest. Many other reserves are now following this system.
The tigers were assigned numbers for the first time in 2009. Each number begins with letter 'T'. In the first lot, the numbers from T-1 to T-45 were assigned. The tigers were assigned numbers again in 2013 - from T-46 to T-75.
"The new tigers have been assigned numbers till T-91. We have done this on the basis of footages of cubs captured by trap cameras in the past. We are currently in the process of tracking all the newborns and other tigers that have grown up recently," said a senior park official.

In absence of the names, many guides and tourists who visit the park frequently named the tigers on their own. A guide, Omi Sharma, said that some names have become very popular.

"Many of these nameless tigers are being called with various names like Arrow Head, Lightly and Packman. Guides and frequent tourists are making these names popular," said Sharma.

Sources said that three cubs littered T-13, two each littered by T-39 and T-30 and one cub littered by T-11 are among the tigers that have not been spotted in the forest in the recent past.
