The Times of India, ce jour. Seema Sharma. TNN. "WII to conduct tiger estimation in 9 countries."

The Wildlife Institute of India (WII) has been mandated by the Global Tiger Forum (GTF) to prepare a protocol and conduct tiger estimation in nine of the 13 tiger range countriesie which have otherwise not set any mechanism for tiger estimation in their areas. WII will also conduct the first snow leopard estimation in the Himalayan belt of Uttarakhand, Jammu and Kashmir, Sikkim, Arunachal Pradesh and Nepal.

WII scientist YV Jhala said, "Tiger estimation is currently conducted only in India, Nepal, Bangladesh and Bhutan while in other south-East Asian countries such as Maynmar, Thailand, Malaysia, Vietnam, Laos, Combodia, it is completely lacking. Russia is doing its own thing. This is the reason the number of tigers in these countries keeps varying."

For instance, in Bangladesh, earlier, tiger number was projected to be 350 which was later changed to 106. In Malayasia too, the its count was altered from 550 to 350, which is creating confusion and affecting efforts in the conservation of the big cat across the world."

He said, owing to the successful pattern of tiger estimation carried by India, which is also adapted by some other countries, GTF has asked them to prepare the protocol for estimation and assist these countries in conducting the tiger estimation process. A workshop on this will be held in Malaysia.

With regard to snow leopard, he said, the estimation of this high altitude species has only been carried in Bhutan so far, not even in India. There is a vague estimation on their numbers. "The estimation of snow leopard will be carried through camera trap which can function in minus 30 degree climate, and also through remotely secured information through satellite," he said, adding that the snow leopard is found in J&K, Sikkim, Arunchal Pardesh, Uttarakhand and Nepal in the Himalayan belt. Though it is found in Mongolia as well, that is a different topography and plateau, for which a different technology has to be developed later. So now the snow leopard estimation is carried in Himalayan region only." He said, a workshop on the development of protocol in this regard has been held at Ladakh recently.

The Times of India, ce jour. Tiger population in Pench reserve risen to 53 : SFRI report.
